Mr. Templeton: Today we're delighted to welcome Storm Constantine to chat with us in VZSciFi. Her official web site is at http://members.aol.com/Malaktawus/, or just click the cat here

MaRZ Man: 2 things scheduled for here<shrug>

C. Candy: <clap clap>

Demon Cat From Hell: is this the lying game?

Mr. Templeton: Just to mention quickly, the Lying Game was put bvack

Demon Cat From Hell: oh okay

Demon Cat From Hell: what's this?

Mr. Templeton: Linsue, just let them know?

MaRZ Man: so its over?

Mr. Templeton: This is a moderated event. To ask a question, please ESP me and I will ask you to ask it if you are an avatar in the room, and voice it for you if you are a ghost.

Generic Dude(GHC): no game then?

Mr. Templeton: Nope

Linsue: Sorry for those of you who missed the announcement at my game last week

Mr. Templeton: sorry

MaRZ Man: crud<sigh>

Mr. Templeton: Storm Constantine is one of the UK's premier fantasy writers.

Linsue: The Lying Game was at 10am today to make way for this event

Demon Cat From Hell: okay thanks all<bow>

MaRZ Man: oh

Mr. Templeton: She has had twenty one books published to date, and numerous short stories. Her interests lie in the dark side of the genre, with all things gothic and bizarre.

Storm Constantine: OK, don't all walk out, folks

Demon Cat From Hell: have fun<wave>

MaRZ Man: ok, back to the park for an hour<shrug>

Mr. Templeton: Storm is best known for her innovative and exotic vision exemplified in her first trilogy which introduced the hermaphroditic race of the Wraeththu.

Generic Dude(GHC): not gone just don't know what this is<shrug>

Linsue: Stay you will have fun

Çountess Diome: Well i came to see ya storm <g>

Mr. Templeton: The books were steeped in occult lore and forbidden sexuality. These are themes that have continued through her other works.

Demon Cat From Hell: what is this tho?

Storm Constantine: Here I am, cat face and all...

Çountess Diome: <g>

Mr. Templeton: Storm, thanks for coming to chat with us tonight. Could we start with the obvious: how did you become an author?

C. Candy: lol yah loook mauuuvelous

Çountess Diome: Dahrlink<g>

Storm Constantine: I've always told stories, even when I was a kid. I became a 'full time' writer because I hatedmy day job and wanted to do something better with my life

Mr. Templeton: what was the day job?

Storm Constantine: I worked in a library, believe it or not. The only Goth in local government!

Mr. Templeton: lol

Çountess Diome: LOL

§cott §tapp: bravo<react>

Mr. Templeton: So was there one thing that promted the change to becoming a writer full time, or was it a gradual thing?

Lord0fDarkness: LoL

Storm Constantine: It was gradual, because I had to build up my career. I gave up the library as soon as humanly possible and worked part time for a charity.

Mr. Templeton: Stig, your question

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: did you start by writing short stories, or go strauight into novels?

Storm Constantine: I'd written a lot of stories before I got published, but the first thing to appear in print was the Wraeththu trilogy

Mr. Templeton: Buffy the Vampire Slayer asks, what advice would you give young writers?

Storm Constantine: I just have to say the cat on the table looks exactly like one of mine who died a few years ago!

Storm Constantine: As for advice, I always say that the first thing you write should be the book/story you've always wanted to read. That way your heart will be in it.

Mr. Templeton: So waht was your first story?

Storm Constantine: The first story to be published was The Pleasure Giver Taken in the Zenith anthology

Mr. Templeton: What was that about?

Storm Constantine: It was about an interstellar call boy

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: heh

Generic Dude(GHC): good job tittle!<g>

§cott §tapp: a man whore?

§cott §tapp: heh

Generic Dude(GHC): that's me!!<grin>

§cott §tapp: no me<jump>

Generic Dude(GHC): J/K

§cott §tapp: heh

Mr. Templeton: Generic Dude, pleae ask your question

Storm Constantine: It seems like I'm in a room with a bunch of my own characters!!!

§cott §tapp: <react>

Generic Dude(GHC): do you have a degree in lit?

Mr. Templeton: ha ha

Storm Constantine: I don't have much formal education. I'm self-taught, although I have taught writing at our local college

Mr. Templeton: In the process of writing and learning about writing, who have been your biggest influences?

Storm Constantine: Unfortunately, when I should have been in education, I was having too much fun hanging out with bands

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: sounds good to me

Storm Constantine: My biggest influences are Mike Moorcock, Tanith Lee and Jack Vance

Generic Dude(GHC): do you use a word prosser or something to that effect?

Storm Constantine: I use a big PC. The more I've used it, the less I can write longhand, because I can type almost as fast as I can think

Linsue: wow I wish I could

§cott §tapp: lol

Mr. Templeton: That's handy -- and you spell correctly, too

Storm Constantine: It comes from years of shitty jobs, believe me!

Generic Dude(GHC): LOL

Mr. Templeton: Just to remind folks, This is a moderated event. To ask a question, please ESP me and I will ask you to ask it if you are an avatar in the room, and voice it for you if you are a ghost.

Generic Dude(GHC): well i qualify then!!

Generic Dude(GHC): <g>

Generic Dude(GHC): ok sorry<bow>

Mr. Templeton: Scott Stapp -- sorry not to spell that right -- asks, how did you arrive at your nom de plime?

Mr. Templeton: plume, even

Generic Dude(GHC): ?

Storm Constantine: It's hard to remember now. I know the first name came from a girl who held a job before me at an office I worked at. I just loved the name! As for the second, I think it came off a wine box!

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: lol

Linsue: lol

§cott §tapp: lol

Generic Dude(GHC): sorry i didn't understand that!<shrug>

§cott §tapp: kewlies

§cott §tapp: wine is good<grin>

§cott §tapp: heh

Generic Dude(GHC): your writer name?

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: So what is your real name, or is that a secret?

§cott §tapp: yes

Generic Dude(GHC): ok <shrug>

§cott §tapp: its french dude

Generic Dude(GHC): thank's

Storm Constantine: My favourite tipple is gin, actually. As for the name, it's been mine for fifteen years now.

§cott §tapp: yw

Lord0fDarkness: *perk* wine?

Storm Constantine: What's perk wine mean?

C. Candy: lol

Lord0fDarkness: just I heard wine and I'm thirsty BrB

Generic Dude(GHC): it woke him /her up!

Storm Constantine: Me too. I'll get Yvan to open a bottle!

§cott §tapp: his intest perked at the mention of wine lol

Generic Dude(GHC): perked him up!

Storm Constantine: Ah, thanks for the explanation

Mr. Templeton: You mentioned Michale Moorcock as an influence... and you have a novel due which you have written with him, Silverheart. How did that come about

Linsue: perked everyone up

Generic Dude(GHC): <react>

Storm Constantine: Mike had a novella he'd written in basic form and wanted someone to turn it into a novel. He asked me because we'd talked about working together for some time.

Mr. Templeton: Micahel lives in the States now, doesn't he? Has it been easy to co-oridnate the writing?

Storm Constantine: He sent me the notes and all the bits he'd written and then more or less left me to get on with it. He was very supportive and answered questions when I needed him to, but didn't interfere other than that. I was lucky he liked what I came up with.

Generic Dude(GHC): lucky or just a good writer?

Storm Constantine: I hope the latter!

Generic Dude(GHC): i think so!

Generic Dude(GHC): <grin>

Storm Constantine: Thanks

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Ooops, sorry folks, it looks like our moderator's machine has crashed

§cott §tapp: <react>

Storm Constantine: Eek! What is this?

§cott §tapp: its a wand

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Looks like a present

Storm Constantine: Should I use it to stir my cocktails?

§cott §tapp: <grin>

§cott §tapp: lmao

§cott §tapp: sure

Generic Dude(GHC): you are now a spelcatser<g>

Generic Dude(GHC): spellcaster even

Storm Constantine: And what does that entail? I'm already a spellcaster in real life!

C. Candy: poor mr.T<sigh>

§cott §tapp: u can use it too

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: He's asked me to step in for a moment, we are working in the same room

§cott §tapp: click on it

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: You are really a wiccan?

Linsue: click on it and clickm use

Storm Constantine: I was. That's how I got into all things weird and wonderful, but as time's gone on, I've diversified.

§cott §tapp: cool

Storm Constantine: Does anyone know how I can use the spellcaster?

Çountess Diome: send one to my keyboard it's going nuts <g>

§cott §tapp: yes click on it

Generic Dude(GHC): click on the wand

§cott §tapp: and then click use

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: There is quaite a big culture of author wiccans in the UK -- Alan Moore, you... do you meet up?

Generic Dude(GHC): subscreen will open

Generic Dude(GHC): click use

Storm Constantine: I don't know alan Moore, but I have a lot of friends who are into magic.

Generic Dude(GHC): i'm into magic

Storm Constantine: By the way, I just clicked on the spellcaster and nothing happened

Storm Constantine: What kind of magic are you into?

Generic Dude(GHC): phantasy book's

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: That was my next question

Generic Dude(GHC): piers anthony's my fav

Storm Constantine: You mean you like the magic you find in fantasy?

Generic Dude(GHC): yes

Storm Constantine: Right. Some writers know what they're on about, others don't. I read some of Anthony years ago, and remember liking it

Generic Dude(GHC): i lie the way he stream's his book's together

Lord0fDarkness: How did you come up with the name Wraeththu?

Storm Constantine: It's an ancient English word which means both 'wrath' and 'rake'. I just like the sound and look of it. It's pronounced Ray Thoo. Someone pointed out to me that in the glossary of the book it was the only word I didn't show how to pronounce!

The librarian: How come you're writing with Mike Moorcock - or have we gone thru all that :-)?

§cott §tapp: lol

Storm Constantine: We've touched on the Mike book. Let's just say we're friends and he supports my work

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Are there any writers currently that you admire, apart from the influences you mentioned?

Storm Constantine: I like a lot of mainstream writers, actually, such as Helen Dunmore, Alice Hoffman and Kate Atkinson. They all write a kind of magical reality. Oh, and Joanne Harris, who wrote Chocolat, which will soon be a movie. Great story. Very magical indeed.

Generic Dude(GHC): how is the moderater?

Storm Constantine: As for genre writers, I like Phil Rickman, Jonathan Carroll

Storm Constantine: One thing I look for in a writer is their style. The prose has to grab me. Hi Mr Templeton, you're back then!

Mr. Templeton: My apologies

Generic Dude(GHC): W/B

Mr. Templeton: there's always something different with each event

Lord0fDarkness: what do you think of Viviane Crowley

The librarian: It wouldn't be fun else

Storm Constantine: Her work was quite inspiring in its day. I've moved on from that kind of thing though.

Lord0fDarkness: I was brought up on her being a wiccan priest from a wiccan upbringing that was the "norm"lol

Storm Constantine: The thing is, Wicca is actually a very modern belief system. It was invented in the 1950s. That doesn't make it invalid, of course, but there are a lot of myths surrounding its inception.

Storm Constantine: I'm giving a talk in London next month on how we reinvent past beliefs to create new systems.

Mr. Templeton: Yes, let's talk more about your Wraethu works (I don't think I've spelt that right)... how did you come to focus on these 'lost races', as it were?

Çountess Diome: where and when storm?please <S>

Storm Constantine: I dreamed up the Wraeththu a long time ago, way back in the late 1970s. I wrote a lot of poems and short stories about them. It was my magical interests that helped me create them, the idea that the soul is androgynous.

Storm Constantine: I sat down and worked seriously on the first novel in 1985

Çountess Diome: opppps

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: There must be some majick going on in here tonight

Storm Constantine: Sorry, You asked about the talk. It's with the LOndon Earth Mysteries group and - you'll hate this - I don't know where yet! Details will be given on my web site. Sorry, if my rod is causing reality problems!

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: How many of these novels have you written sto date, Storm?:

Storm Constantine: Wraeththu novels?

Çountess Diome: Thank you <S>

Archivist Shiren of the T'Chell: ooer

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: yes

Storm Constantine: I've written three so far, but as coincidence would have it, I'm currently trying to flog some more to my publishers. People keep asking for them, and I thought that now is the time to do it. I have a lot of new ideas.

Generic Dude(GHC): what is you fav book that you wrote?

bubbles the monkey: hi

Storm Constantine: Oooh, toughie! I tend to love the one I've just written, but I suppose Sign for the Sacred is one of my favourites. Hi to the newcomer!

bubbles the monkey: what is this all about?

Storm Constantine: It's a wobbly reality zone

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Hi today we're talking to Storm Constantine and Mr Temepleton, who should be this, has been ensorcelled or something...

bubbles the monkey: i know what this place is lol

Storm Constantine: Do tell...

bubbles the monkey: but what is this event about?

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: This is a modrated talk, please esp me your questions so we can have a at least a little order

[You may now receive ESP.]

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: <grin>

Lord0fDarkness: oops

Generic Dude(GHC): i haven't read any of your noval's what one should i start with?

Storm Constantine: What is your favourite genre - ok, my friend Eloise just said, tell them to get the most expensive! Really, do you like horror, fantasy or sf?

Generic Dude(GHC): fantasy

Generic Dude(GHC): and hi friend<wave>

Storm Constantine: Then you'd probably like the new trilogy, the Magravandias Chronicles. the first one's called 'Sea Dragon Heir' and is out in both the States and the UK. the second volume is just out in the UK and will appear in the States next year

Generic Dude(GHC): i love dragonS!<grin>

Lord0fDarkness: We always get late <sigh>

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: We have had a competition for Sea Dragon Heir on the vzscifi web site... can you tell us more about this new trilogy, please?

Storm Constantine: It's an epic fantasy, but I've tried to avoid cliches of the genre. There are no out and out baddies, just differing viewpoints. Some people regard Magravandias as an evil empire, but the Magravandians regard themselves as enlightened and civilised.

Storm Constantine: The dragons are elemental spirits, not real Anne McCaffrey fire breathing types. I think they're more scary that way, unpredicable

Storm Constantine: I meant unpredictable!

Generic Dude(GHC): they are dragon's though?

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Are the themes of these new novels a development of your interest in dualism, which you mention on your web site

Storm Constantine: Yes

Storm Constantine: I don't think there is any one truth, but rather a multitude of perceptions.

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Would you mind expanding on that a little? I'm not sure I understand

Linsue: wb again

Lord0fDarkness: wb Mr T

C. Candy: care to stay awhile Mr T? lol

Generic Dude(GHC): <react>

Mr. Templeton: grrr

Storm Constantine: Well, everyone's version of events differs, doesn't it? Therefore no one can actually be 'right'. This is a bit complicated to expand upon here. Email me if you're really interested.

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: ok thank you

Storm Constantine: Truth isn't a priori

Storm Constantine: Anyway, as a writer I am an accomplished liar!

Generic Dude(GHC): <react>

C. Candy: and paid to do so

§cott §tapp: u should stay for the lying game lol

Generic Dude(GHC): alot are and they aren't writer's<g>

Storm Constantine: Miserably...

§cott §tapp: <react>

Lady Cath: LOL

Lady Cath: (lie out loud)

Mr. Templeton: So you have a trilogy in publication right now, but you seem to have many other projects in the works... is it easy to swap between the different projects

Mr. Templeton: ?

Generic Dude(GHC): yes i'd like to here some of your answer's to the game lyer's<g>

§cott §tapp: <grin>

Storm Constantine: I like a lot of variety, which is why I do non-fiction projects as well as fiction. I like collaborating with other people

[Open URL: http://members.aol.com/Malaktawus/Storm.htm]

Mr. Templeton: What non projects are you working on now?

Storm Constantine: I've got a couple of proposals out with publishers. One is called 'Secret Earth' which I'm doing with Deb Benstead, and the other is a book on Egyptian Astrology.

§cott §tapp: dont u think diversity waters down your influence in a particular genre?

Storm Constantine: Not at all. You can get stale if you just stick in one pond.

§cott §tapp: I see

Generic Dude(GHC): <react>

§cott §tapp: <grin>

Mr. Templeton: How do you research something like Egyptian Astrology? Is there much resource material?

Storm Constantine: I'm working with a writer friend who wants to remain anonymous, because he's a 'serious' historical researcher and can't publish it himself. He's already done a lot of the research.

Mr. Templeton: Is there much actually translated from the Egyptian, then?

Storm Constantine: There is quite a lot of material, if you know where to look. At the Dendera site in Egypt, there is a 'zodiac' on the roof that shows all the constellations and some of the signs we're familiar with in the West.

Storm Constantine: The precessionof the equinoxes were very important to the Egyptians. the sphinx is a symbol of the sign of Leo.

Storm Constantine: It faces the rising sun as it would have appeared in the Age of Leo.

Lord0fDarkness: wow

Mr. Templeton: How much is the astrology of today influenced by Egyptian knowledge?

Storm Constantine: Very much so. It's difficult to say exactly where it originated, but it was probably Persia.

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: It's no wonder your books are based on stroeis from those times...

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: do you go out of your way to find new stories from Babylon to work with?

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Babylon just one place, I can see

Storm Constantine: It fascinates me. there's so much we've lost and forgotten. As for what inspires me, things just seem to crop up unexpectedly.

Mr. Templeton: For example?

Storm Constantine: It's probably a bit convoluted to go into here, but it involves psychic questing

Storm Constantine: Again, if anyone is interested in this, there's stuff on my web site and the associated site, which is about magic

Mr. Templeton: Do you mean using what is colloquially called astral projection, out of body exploration?

Lady Cath: Interesting.. do you have a sprit guide?

Mr. Templeton: (Without going into too much detail)

Storm Constantine: No, it's not astral projection, but more a form of meditation. And yes, i do have a spirit guide. It sounds a bit cheesy, I know, but I met him a few years ago and since I took up Reiki he came through more

Mr. Templeton: Getting back to your novels, you seem excited by the prospect of new Wreathu novels... ae these the novels the books you would say you really write from the heart?

Lady Cath: Thought so.. hmm i dismissed mine lol

Lady Cath: shh

Lady Cath: (carry on)

Storm Constantine: I am excited by the prospect, but had to wait for the right time to continue the story. The new material will obviously be very different because I'm 15 years older

Mr. Templeton: So will there be many changes to the way you tell the new stories?

Storm Constantine: It means I can answer a lot of the questions I've been asked over the years. I've got more experience as a writer now, so can fill in the 'holes' so to speak. There won't be many changes, but my style will obviously be different

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: Storm, has there been interest in adpating your stories for film or tv?

Storm Constantine: I intend to use the first person voice again, and the first book will be from Pellaz' point of view.

Storm Constantine: I wish there had been interest from TV/film!

Storm Constantine: I met a scriptwriter recently, who told me my work was very filmable. I'm hoping he'll do something about it!

Mr. Templeton: With modrn effects technology your works seem perfect for it, and the characters certainly stand out in my memory...

Storm Constantine: The Wraeththu might be a problem though. How would they cast it?

Storm Constantine: For the benefit of anyone who's not read Wraeththu, the characters are hermaphrodites!

Mr. Templeton: True! What works do you think would make ideal visual material?

Storm Constantine: I think the Grigori trilogy, my books about the fallen angels, would be the easiest to film

Storm Constantine: Because the books are set in this world and time. We'd need some very tall actors though!

Storm Constantine: All the normal people would have to be played by Tom Cruise

Mr. Templeton: LOL! Well, perhaps that is something we will see in the future. Storm, thank you very much for taking time out to talk with us today

Linsue: lol

Storm Constantine: Thanks for having me here. It was fun!

§cott §tapp: yes thank you<bow>

Mr. Templeton: And please don't hex me if you come back <grin>

§cott §tapp: was our pleasure<jump>

Linsue: Thanks Storm

§cott §tapp: lol

Generic Dude(GHC): Thank's Storm

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: rthank you very much

§cott §tapp: and learn to use that wand<grin>

Storm Constantine: Please take a look at my web site. It's very good - honest.

Lord0fDarkness: well now that you got an avie you can stay in our world

§cott §tapp: lol

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: It's great, I have it up now on the cat page

Generic Dude(GHC): and tell elouise happy brthday from all of us!<wave>

Storm Constantine: I don't know. I'll have to speak to the big boys about it, won't I.

Stig Redfin of the Ukrann: If you click on the cat it it will take you to it

§cott §tapp: it always worked for me... <shrug>

§cott §tapp: lol

§cott §tapp: <wave>

Mr. Templeton: Thanks for coming and we look forwared to seeing many more novels from you in the future

Storm Constantine: thanks very much

Plain, simple Garak: Thank you!! <grin>

Çountess Diome: Thanks Storm <S>

Generic Dude(GHC): try to ghost then unghost to use the wand

Mr. Templeton: Watch out for more author events (hopefully without temporal imbalances) here in future folks!

Storm Constantine: No, it's still not working

Generic Dude(GHC): hmmm

Çountess Diome: LOL

Generic Dude(GHC): try this one

Mr. Templeton: Be sure to check the vzscifi.co.uk site regularly

Storm Constantine: I don't want to lose this cat persona!

Storm Constantine: She's so cool

Mr. Templeton: You wont

Çountess Diome: LOL
