Origins

Fujitsu were operating the Habitat II service since March 1996 and it was an active service with a good amount of users, but revenues appeared to not match the companies expectations and J-Chat was born from that. According to an August 1999 press release, J-Chat was designed with women and "beginners" at the forefront of everything. They assured users there would be stricter community guidelines and policing so women could chat in peace and enjoy themselves inworld, with a focus on events, decorating and chat.

Closure

G-Search Limited released a "Service Termination Notice" on July 29, 2009 that said the following:

Thank you for using J-Chat.

J-Chat, a visual communication service using avatars, celebrated its 10th anniversary in September 2009, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in January 2010, counting back to its predecessor, Fujitsu Habitat.

We are grateful for the continued support and patronage of all of you, as it has been possible to continue the service up to this point. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who have supported the service.


With new Internet services constantly emerging, we have considered various options, including reviewing our pricing structure and developing new services, to meet your needs. However, we have come to the conclusion that it would be difficult to continue the service from a revenue perspective, and we have no choice but to end the J-Chat service as of Tuesday, January 26, 2010.


We sincerely apologize to everyone currently enjoying J-Chat, and all of our staff are deeply saddened to have to end a service that has been around since the dawn of the internet, but we ask for your understanding.


With only six months left, we have a variety of events planned, so we hope you will continue to enjoy J-Chat until the very end.

*The free period is from 8:00 AM on December 20th, 2009 to January 26th, 2010 for Nifty, and from January 1st to January 26th, 2010 for OCN.


We are planning a "Thank You Final Campaign" to express our gratitude for your patronage and to commemorate the occasion. As soon as
the date is decided, it will be announced on the special page and event calendar.

We hope you enjoy the campaign until the very end, and we hope that all of you who have used our service in the past, including those who used to use our service during the Habitat era, will take advantage of this opportunity.

平素はJ-チャットをご利用いただきまして、誠にありがとうございます。

アバターを用いたビジュアルコミュニケーション「J-チャット」は、2009年9月で10周年、また、前身サービス「富士通ハビタット」から数えますと、2010年1月で20周年をを迎えます。
これまでサービスを続けることが出来たのは、ひとえに皆様の応援とご愛顧の賜物と感謝しております。サービスを支えていただいた皆様には、長らくのご愛顧を感謝申し上げます。


日々、新しいインターネットサービスが続々登場している今、皆様のご要望にお答えすべく、料金形態の見直し、新規開発を含め、様々に検討して参りましたが、収益の面からも継続してサービスを続けることが難しいとの判断に至り、やむをえず2010年1月26日（火曜日）をもちまして、J-チャットはサービスを終了させていただくことになりました。


現在J-チャットを楽しんでいただいている皆様には誠に申し訳なく、また、インターネット黎明期からの流れをくむサービスを終了するのは、スタッフ一同大変心苦しく思っておりますが、何卒ご理解賜りますようお願い申し上げます。


残り6ヶ月ではございますが、様々なイベントを計画してございますので、最後までJ-チャットをお楽しみくださいますようお願い申し上げます。
